The cake was a story in itself. I made the simplest cake I could--from a cake box with canned icing. All was well, until I started icing it. I even bought two cans of icing. Well, the first layer went okay. The second layer was definitely NOT okay. The cake stuck to the icing. The icing stuck to the spatula and my fingers. The cake was ripping apart. (Good thing I'm not known for my culinary skills--or have a lot of pride attached to my (lack of) skills. Anyway, it wasn't working out, so I just left it and started vacuuming the house. Mike came in from getting the BBQ ready and attempted to help with the cake. He did a great job trying to salvage it with what he had to work with. He even cut off the back side. We just wanted a good cake picture.:)
Mike's mom decorated it for us. Thank you, Mom. (I was not to touch it anymore.) We decided to take pictures of it before dinner and to sing to her, too. We even lit it and sang to her before Matt, Jess, and Ethan came. Sorry to exclude them, but desperate times call for desperate measures.
After we sang to her, Jenelle took out the train candles and licked them--as we've taught her to do. I guess they were holding the cake together. This is what it looked like by the time we served it. By the way, I served it with a serving SPOON in bowls. Less pressure to make sure it looks nice. By the end of the evening--even in the middle of the evening, it was a funny.
Ethan (10 months) wasn't really into making nice regular pictures, but he sure was entertaining.
Jenelle got many fun gifts. This is her "hairy" ball that lights up when you bounce it. Very fun.
This is her easel from Mike's parents--it holds paper for painting or coloring and has a magnetic/white board side, too. Very versatile.
On Friday, Auntie M asked Jenelle if she should bring anything to Jenelle's party. Jenelle answered, "You could paint your toenails". So, among other things, Auntie M got Jenelle some finger/toenail polish. Here they are showing off their newly painted toenails.
Jenelle got an art apron from Mike's parents and a "Cars" baking/cooking from Aunt Shelle and the Loves.
Clayton didn't want to go in while the moon was still visible, so I took our picture. I need longer arms. This was the best out of three.:)
The party was good, but wouldn't have been as good without the help from Mike's mom (decorated the cake, brought a noodle salad, cut up the onion), my mom (made the fruit salad), my dad (cut up the tomatoes and lettuce for the burgers), and Mike (washed dishes before, barbecued the meat, and cleaned up afterwards) and all the loving family who participated from near or faraway. Basically I just provided the kid.:) Jenelle had a good birthday week.

Ethan certainly didn't give any smiles for the camera :) Glad we could come celebrate Jenelle's birthday with you. Your cake was a great volcano cake, I thought that's how it was supposed to be, right?
Sure, the cake could be called a volcano or mudslide, but I'm probably supposed to name it before I make it, huh?:)
Looks like the party was a success. Allison wanted to look through all the pictures twice.
